TAJO-SALOR
The Tajo Salor region (so named as the two rivers run north and south of the area)
reaches from the village of Monroy, just north east of Cáceres , over to Alcántara in
the west, very close to the Portuguese border. There are four villages east of the A66
motorway going north from Cáceres and these are known as the Quatro Lugares (the four
places). These are all ideally based for close access to both Cáceres city and the
national park of Monfragüe, a sanctuary for many species of wildlife and famous for
its birds of prey.
West of the A66 lie the other 11 villages of the Tajo Salor. None of the villages
here are close to each other as this part of Extremadura, like many other parts, is
uncrowded with wide open spaces covered in the huge rocks that look like they are still
pushing up through the earth and the oak trees that provide the acorns which flavours the
famous pork and the Jamon Iberico, the wonderful tasting ham. The acorns are also the
basis for the Extremaduran Kiss - the liqueur Bellota.
Although the region is very hot in the summer the many rivers, lakes and reservoirs
provide cooling views and in the springtime the flowers in the meadows make the countryside
come alive with a myriad of colours.
